Murphy is recruiting for a Principal Engineer – MAE – HV Substation Protection & Control to work with Murphy Applied Engineering on HV Substations, with a Protection and Control background.
Our engineering teams encompass a multi-disciplinary range of skills, adding value across sectors, and advancing digital construction, engineering innovation, and design to deliver sustainable, intelligent, and economical solutions.
Under Murphy Applied Engineering, our in-house teams include civil, structural, mechanical, geotechnical, and process engineers. They design both permanent and temporary works, providing expert advice to Murphy colleagues and external clients.
A day in the life of a Principal Engineer – HV Substation Protection & Control
- Interpret client design specifications and lead the team in developing conceptual designs.
- Lead the creation of specifications and Bill of Quantities for equipment to facilitate requests for quotations.
- Assess supplier quotations and engage suppliers to align them with specifications.
- Estimate time for detailed design engineering.
- Identify and evaluate chargeable work, maintaining records of time spent.
- Ensure detailed design work complies with procedures and maintains professionalism.
- Produce detailed designs, calculations, drawings, diagrams, and sketches per standards and codes.
- Perform design checks for team members and external designers.
- Provide guidance on design and operational issues.
- Consider design risks and prepare risk assessments for residual risks.
- Supervise design team members and subcontractors to ensure quality and timeliness.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to their development.
- Coordinate information flow for detailed design drawings for construction.
- Conduct site visits and surveys.
Candidate Requirements
- Experience in high voltage transmission and distribution substation projects.
- National Grid TP141 HV Substation Protection & Control (CDAE) authorization.
- Ability to manage design feedback and liaise with departments and project teams.
- Knowledge of substation automation from tender to completion.
- Develop conceptual designs aligned with legislation and safety standards.
- Manage interfaces with internal/external design teams.
- Monitor and administer Change Controls.
- Build relationships with technical consultants and suppliers for technical solutions.
